Today I had the opportunity to discuss personal missions, talents, gifts and purpose today with my 9-year-old Sunday School students. We talked about Moses and various other people from the Bible and about their personal life missions--how their gifts, talents and experiences prepared them for the things they were to do, how they had little faith in their abilities in the beginning, how their faith AND their abilities grew over time with the help of God, and the differences they made in the lives of others.
Of the many valuable gems of wisdom found in these stories, two things really stood out for me in our discussion that I wanted to share with you. The first thing is that as each of us shares our talents and gifts with others, we make it possible for ALL of us to experience ALL gifts and talents. I may not be able to sing well, but I can listen to someone with that talent and still be able to experience and enjoy it. I may not have the knowledge required to solve a specific problem that I have, but someone else DOES! And if they share it with me, my problem can be easily solved. This means that we can all have everything we need and want if we are willing to share what we have.
The second thing that stood out to me is that each one of us has a significant part to play in helping all of the rest of us realize our full potential as human beings. As I fulfill my life mission (by becoming my true self--the person I was created to be), I
help others to do the same and vice versa. We need each other to become all that we are capable of becoming. This means that each of us is equally valuable and significant, and we are interdependent with each other--not enemies, but teammates!
So while these thoughts are very empowering and exciting to me, I am wondering about myself and about you as well...What are you hiding?
Are there talents that you are hiding away? What are the gifts that you
have to offer to humanity? How is your life purpose intertwined with mine? And what happens when someone refuses their life mission or hides their gifts from the world? How many others will suffer in some way because we have refused to be the powerful beings that we were meant to be?
