Something strange happened to me this week.

I was traveling back from London and I picked up a copy of the Evening Standard. I turned to the back page and began reading the sports section - my normal routine when I read newspapers. Usually, I stop reading when I incur the first non-sports story. I do this because media tends to focus on problems and since I tend to get what I focus on I tend not to read, watch or listen to news.

On Wednesday, for some strange reason, I felt compelled to read beyond the sports pages. After flicking few a few pages of travel and television news I reached pages 24 and 25, where I was in for a shock.

On each page contained an inspirational story. Page 24 reported how children in a London primary are being taught how to love each other in a movement to improve behaviour. Pupils at Forestdale, in Croydon, learn to recognise a different value each week, such as trust, love or teamwork. Ofsted inspectors have found that discipline in the 200 pupil school is outstanding and the kids have been very mature about the initiative. Their wellbeing has improved from very good on the previous inspection, to excellent.

What wonderful news. It represented a refreshing change for me. Perhaps even more inspirational was the story next to it about Rico Dibrivell who survived 12 days under rubble in Haiti, with no food or water. His survival was a phenomenal tale of how the human spirit can cause the body to act in ways that are considered impossible by most. I can only imagine what it would have been like to be trapped with a broken leg for such a long time. A truly uplifting tale amidst a tragedy.

Is there a danger of positive news becoming a feature or was the Standard just having an off day? Either way, it's the first time in living memory that I have read the non-sports pages of a newspaper and felt genuinely uplifted.
